MAN's CEO Des Evans demonstrates the benefits of fuel economy on cutting CO2 emissions to transport Minister Stephen Hammond.

It’s lunchtime on the second day at the CV Show 2014, and MAN Truck & Bus UK has been one of the busiest stands across the entire exhibition, as the positive news of our outstandingly economical Euro-6 product line-up has gathered momentum. Enquiries from operators are significantly ahead of where we were this time last year, and now look to be heading for an all-time record by the time the Show ends at 5:30 tomorrow.

Just as important, dozens of major operators, the majority existing customers, have also been onto the Stand for meetings with our senior team: at the time of writing an order in excess of 60 tractor units for a leading distribution customer is anticipated. This is particularly exciting for us, as they have been very carefully trialling our new Euro-6 tractors, both against their current MAN Euro-5 fleet and competitive Euro-6 models, with very positive results! Like a couple of other very large operators running similar trials, they are getting consistent results above 10.0mpg and better. AdBlue consumption is also running at just 2.8% of fuel consumption, compared with the in-excess-of 7% we are hearing about from some other manufacturers.

Little wonder our AdBlue tank is far and away the smallest among all Euro-6 tractors on offer in the UK. We just don’t need a bigger one!

The corresponding impact of this fuel economy on CO2 emissions was not lost on Transport Minister, Stephen Hammond, when he came onto the stand to talk to our CEO, Des Evans. So impressed was the Minister that a further meeting is now planned; to continue the conversation about some of Des’ ideas to stimulate a faster uptake of Euro-6 by helping the operating industry with tax breaks and other investment incentives.

Right now, the Stand is jammed with operators looking at the exhibits – everything from 7.5t rigids up to maximum weight TGX tractors including an eye-catching TopUsed TGX tractor – as well as Euro-6 engines and the all-important Diesel Particulate Filter. So it’s back to work, but we’ll be back with an update in the morning of Day Three.
